In the fashion world layering is not only an essential part of every girls winter wardrobe, but it is also an art form. Unfortunately layering can be tricky and make you appear larger than you actually are... but when done correctly it can accentuate your curves and create the illusion of a proportional silhouette. Here are the five basic steps to a perfectly layered outfit.
The 5 Outfit Essentials
- Start with a basic, lightweight top. I suggest a solid, something neutral, or striped. (if you're going to be wearing a heavy trench coat I like wearing a sleeveless sweater or turtleneck to create the illusion of a sweater without the bulkiness)
- Add another layer like a sweater or cardigan. I usually like wearing neutral colors, but this can be fun to add a pop of color to ad more depth to your outfit.
- Now add a jacket or a coat. Try to stick to a black or camel trench.
- Next add a scarf! This is like the finishing touch, and it looks especially great if its a chunky/blanket scarf.
- Finish off the look with accessories! Add a hat/beanie, rings, and bracelets!
Additional Tips
- Keep your underneath layers more fitted to keep a sleek silhouette.
- Always play with textures! Mix metallic, leathers, furs, and knits to add interest and depth to your outfit. If you keep everything the same texture or color it can appear drab, bulky, and boring.
- If you don't want to appear too bulky add a belt around your waistline.
- Keep in mind that length and proportion is key!
